Araucaria cunninghamii, known as colonial pine, is a species in the Araucariaceae family. It is also referred to by names such as hoop pine, Queensland pine, Dorrigo pine, Moreton Bay pine, and Richmond River pine. The species was named after botanist and explorer Allan Cunningham, who collected the first specimens in the 1820s. It represents the earliest-diverging extant lineage within the genus and is the only species in section Eutacta found on continental mainland areas, while other species in the section are naturally limited to islands.

Description

Araucaria cunninghamii is native to regions including IN, LY, Garden Route National Park, Lord Howe Island, and is cultivated globally. It was first described in 1829 by Mudie. This conifer is notable for being the only mainland-distributed species in section Eutacta, with all other members of the section restricted to island habitats. Its common names reflect its historical and regional significance, particularly in Australia. The species is part of the Araucariaceae family, a group of ancient conifers with a long evolutionary history.
