It is distributed across several regions including Langkawi, the Andaman Islands, Bangladesh, Borneo, Cambodia, Hawaii, India, Malaya, Myanmar, New Guinea, the Nicobar Islands, the Northern Territory, the Philippines, Queensland, the Solomon Islands, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Thailand, and Vanuatu. The species was first described in 1836.
