It is distributed across southern China, including the Hainan region, as well as southeastern Tibet, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The species was first described in 1954 by H.L. Li. Its common name, Hainan Plum Yew, reflects its association with the Hainan region. This species is part of the broader distribution of Cephalotaxus, which extends into various parts of Asia.
