It is native to regions including Andaman Is., Borneo, Cambodia, China South-Central, China Southeast, Laos, Malaya, Myanmar, Nicobar Is., Philippines, Sumatera, Thailand, and Vietnam. The species was first described in 1856. In Vietnam, it is commonly known as thành ngạch nam or lành ngạnh nam, with other local names including hoàng ngưu mộc, hoàng ngưu trà, and đỏ ngọn. The specific epithet cochinchinense is derived from the Latin for 'of Cochinchina'.
