Thuja occidentalis is an evergreen coniferous tree in the Cupressaceae family, native to eastern Canada and parts of the northeastern and north-central United States. It is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant and is often confused with Juniperus virginiana.

Description

Thuja occidentalis, known as American Arbor-Vitae, is a species in the Cupressaceae family. It is native to regions including Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. It is also found in parts of Europe and Asia, including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, Denmark, and Austria. The species was first described in 1753 by Linnaeus. Thuja occidentalis is an evergreen conifer that is widely cultivated for ornamental purposes. It is sometimes referred to as northern white-cedar or eastern white-cedar. It is important to distinguish it from Juniperus virginiana, a similar-looking species.
