Kalmia procumbens is a dwarf shrub found in high mountain regions of the Northern Hemisphere, typically reaching a height of no more than 10 centimeters. It was originally described by Linnaeus as Azalea procumbens and later named after L.L.A. Loiseleur-Deslongchamps as Loiseleuria procumbens. Commonly known as alpine azalea or trailing azalea, it belongs to the Ericaceae family.

Description

Kalmia procumbens is a low-growing shrub native to high-altitude areas in the Northern Hemisphere. It is part of the Ericaceae family and is known for its compact size, rarely exceeding 10 cm in height. The species was first classified by Linnaeus under the genus Azalea as Azalea procumbens. It was later associated with the name Loiseleuria procumbens in honor of botanist L.L.A. Loiseleur-Deslongchamps. The plant is commonly referred to as alpine azalea or trailing azalea in English. It was formally published in 2005 under the current scientific name Kalmia procumbens (L.) Gift, Kron & P.F.Stevens ex Galasso, Banfi & F.Conti.
