Trochodendron aralioides, known as wheel tree, is a flowering plant and the only living species in the genus Trochodendron. It is native to Japan, southern Korea, and Taiwan. This species is typically found in lower temperate montane mixed forests in Japan and in broad-leaved evergreen forests in the central mountain ranges and northern parts of Taiwan. The genus Trochodendron also includes several extinct species.
Description
Trochodendron aralioides was first described in 1839 by Siebold & Zucc. It is part of the family Trochodendraceae, which was previously considered to include only this species. Recent taxonomic revisions have included the genus Tetracentron in the same family. The species is distributed across Japan, southern Korea, Taiwan, and parts of the Nansei-shoto. It is commonly referred to as wheel tree in English and other languages.
