Osyris compressa
Osyris compressa (P.J.Bergius) A.DC.
Osyris compressa (P.J.Bergius) A.DC., a member of the Santalaceae family, is native to the Cape Provinces, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mozambique. It was first described in 1857. Previously known as Colpoon compressum, the species was reclassified into the genus Osyris following DNA studies around 2001. However, the taxonomic status of the name remains under review.
Description
Osyris compressa is a hemiparasitic plant in the Santalaceae family. It was originally described as Colpoon compressum by P.J.Bergius and later transferred to the genus Osyris by A.DC. in 1857. The reclassification was based on molecular evidence that grouped Colpoon with Osyris. Despite this, the name Colpoon compressum is still considered by some as the accepted name, according to Kew Gardens. The species is found in South Africa and adjacent regions. Taxonomic discussions highlight the complexity of its nomenclature, with some authors considering it a synonym of Cassine peragua L., though this is disputed. Linnaeus' name for the species is regarded as superfluous and illegitimate due to its homotypic status with Bergius' original name.
