Musa basjoo is a species in the Musaceae family, commonly known as Japanese banana. It was first described in 1910 and is native to Sichuan province in China. Previously believed to originate from the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, its specific name comes from the Japanese term 'bashō'.

Musa basjoo, also referred to as Japanese fiber banana or hardy banana, is a flowering plant in the Musaceae family. It is distributed across regions including Italy, India, Belgium, the Flemish Region, Japan, China South-Central, China Southeast, and Korea. The species was first described in cultivation and has since been recognized as originating from Sichuan, China. Its name is derived from the Japanese word 'bashō', reflecting its historical association with Japan.
