Ensete ventricosum, known as Abyssinian Banana, is a species in the Musaceae family. It is primarily cultivated in Ethiopia, where it serves as a staple food for around 20 million people. The plant is native to the eastern edge of the Great African Plateau, with a distribution that includes regions from South Africa to Ethiopia and west to the Congo. It is found in high-rainfall forests, on mountains, and along forested ravines and streams. The name was first published in 1947 in the Kew Bulletin.

Description

Ensete ventricosum is a flowering plant in the banana family, Musaceae. It is also referred to as enset, Ethiopian banana, pseudo-banana, false banana, and wild banana. The domesticated form is cultivated exclusively in Ethiopia, where it is a vital food source. In its wild form, it is native to parts of Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Congo. It grows in high-rainfall environments, particularly in mountainous forests and along forested ravines and streams. The species has several synonyms, including Musa arnoldiana, Musa ventricosa, and Musa ensete.
