Description

Swietenia humilis is a member of the Meliaceae family and is native to regions including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. It is one of three recognized genuine mahogany species within the Swietenia genus. Compared to its relatives, S. humilis is much smaller, growing to a maximum height of 6 metres. This is one-fifth the height of S. mahagoni and one-sixth that of S. macrophylla. The species was first described in 1837 by Zucc. The name 'humilis' is derived from Latin and means 'small' or 'dwarfish,' reflecting the tree's compact size.
