Swietenia macrophylla, known as Big Leaf Mahogany, is a species in the Meliaceae family. It is one of three Swietenia species that produce genuine mahogany timber. Native to South America, Mexico, and Central America, it has been naturalized in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hawaii, and is cultivated in plantations and wind-breaks globally.

Description

Swietenia macrophylla, also referred to as Honduran mahogany or big-leaf mahogany, belongs to the Meliaceae family. It is found in South America, Mexico, and Central America, and has been introduced to regions such as the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hawaii. The species is cultivated in plantations and used for wind-breaks. It is one of three species in the Swietenia genus that produce genuine mahogany timber, alongside Swietenia mahagoni and Swietenia humilis. The species was first described in 1886.
