Matteuccia struthiopteris, known as Fiddlehead Fern, is a fern species in the family Onocleaceae. It is native to regions including DK, FI, NO, SE, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and parts of the United States. The species was published in 1866. The name derives from the Greek words for 'ostrich' and 'fern', alluding to the shape of its fronds.

Description

Matteuccia struthiopteris is a fern species with a wide distribution across Europe and parts of North America. It is found in countries such as Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, as well as in the Czech Republic, Ireland, and Vermont in the U.S. The species was formally described in 1866. The specific epithet 'struthiopteris' is derived from the Greek words στρουθίων (strouthíōn), meaning 'ostrich', and πτερίς (pterís), meaning 'fern', referring to the appearance of the fronds. The genus Matteuccia contains only this single species. Historical notes indicate that the type specimen for the name was not original material collected by Linnaeus, but rather an Arduino collection received later.
