Campanulorchis thao is an epiphytic orchid in the Orchidaceae family, native to Hainan, Vietnam, and recently recorded in Laos. It grows in lowland to montane forests at elevations between 300 and 2100 m. The species flowers from November to March, with pale yellow sepals and petals and a lip marked with a reddish brown tint. It has a creeping growth habit and is characterized by narrowly ovate to ovate sepals, obovate-rhomboid petals, and a three-lobed lip with distinct keels. The column is glabrous, and the fruit is obconoid and hairy. The species has been documented in over 50 locations in Vietnam, one in Hainan, and two in Laos, with the latter representing new national records.
Description
Campanulorchis thao is a creeping epiphyte with petiolate leaves that are broadly lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, measuring 5–16 cm long and 1.2–2.8 cm wide. The peduncle is densely pale brown tomentose, 1.5–2.5 cm long, and bears a single flower. The floral bract is small and triangular. The sepals and petals are pale yellow, with sepals narrowly ovate to ovate, about 2 cm long and 8 mm wide. Petals are glabrous, obovate-rhomboid, and slightly oblique. The lip is pale yellow with a reddish brown tint, 3-lobed, and features three keels on its disc. The column is 8 mm long, glabrous, with triangular stelidia and a hemispherical anther cap. The fruit is erect, obconoid, hairy, and up to 2.2 cm long.
