Averrhoa carambola, known as blimbing, is a tree in the Oxalidaceae family native to tropical Southeast Asia. It is cultivated in tropical and semitropical regions for its edible fruit. The tree grows 5 to 12 m tall and produces small, bell-shaped flowers with five petals that have whitish edges. These flowers are often produced year-round in tropical conditions. The species was first described by L. in 1753.

Description

Averrhoa carambola is a small tree or shrub in the Oxalidaceae family. It is native to tropical Southeast Asia and is cultivated for its edible fruit, commonly known as carambola, star fruit, or five-corner. The tree can reach heights of 5 to 12 m and features rose to red-purple flowers. The flowers are small and bell-shaped, with five petals having whitish edges. Flowering often occurs year-round in tropical climates. The species was described by L. in 1753. Specimens annotated by Houttuyn and collected in Java and Ceylon are preserved in herbarium collections.
