Musa balbisiana is a wild species of banana and one of the ancestors of modern cultivated bananas, alongside Musa acuminata. It is a member of the Musaceae family and is commonly referred to as banana.

Musa balbisiana, described by Colla in 1820, is a species in the Musaceae family. It is native to regions including BR, TW, ST, Andaman Is., Assam, Bismarck Archipelago, Borneo, China South-Central, China Southeast, East Himalaya, Gulf of Guinea Is., Hainan, Hawaii, India, Japan, Jawa, Malaya, Myanmar, and Nansei-shoto. It is a wild-type banana and contributes to the genetic background of cultivated bananas, particularly in the development of plantain varieties. Commonly known as banana, it is distributed globally and plays a significant role in the evolution of domesticated banana crops.
