Azolla nilotica is a floating fern species in the family Salviniaceae, native to eastern and central Africa, particularly along the Nile. It was first described in 1867 and is distributed across several countries including Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, and others.

Description

Azolla nilotica is a medium-sized aquatic fern belonging to the family Salviniaceae. It is found naturally in freshwater habitats across Burundi, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zaïre, and Zimbabwe. The species was first published in 1867 and is commonly associated with the Nile region. It grows as a free-floating plant and is part of the genus Azolla, which includes other small, aquatic ferns.
