Atlantic White Cedar

Chamaecyparis thyoides is a coniferous tree in the Cupressaceae family, native to the Atlantic coast of North America. It is found from southern Maine to Georgia and along the Gulf of Mexico coast from Florida to Mississippi. The species is one of two Chamaecyparis species in North America, with C. lawsoniana on the West Coast. There are two subspecies, Chamaecyparis thyoides thyoides and Chamaecyparis thyoides henryae, which are sometimes treated as distinct species or at varietal rank. The tree is commonly found in forested wetlands and is associated with a variety of other wetland species due to its extensive range. The remaining populations are now found in remote locations, making it less accessible for commercial use, and its popularity as a source of lumber has decreased.
