Ulmus wallichiana Planch., the Himalayan elm, is a mountain tree native to the West Himalaya region, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nepal, growing at elevations of 800–3000 m. It is sometimes confused with Ulmus villosa, a similar but distinct species found in the same area. The Himalayan elm is closely related to the wych elm, Ulmus glabra.

Description

Ulmus wallichiana is a member of the Ulmaceae family and is commonly known as the Himalayan elm, Kashmir elm, or Bhutan elm. It is distributed across the West Himalaya, including central Nuristan in Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, northern India, and western Nepal. This species is often mistaken for Ulmus villosa, which grows in valleys rather than on mountain slopes and has a different appearance.
