Phyllanthus amarus thuộc họ Phyllanthaceae, được phát hiện vào năm 1827 bởi Schumach. & Thonn. Cây phân bố ở nhiều khu vực như Complejo Humedales Hato Corozal, BR, CO, Parque Nacional Natural Sierra de la Macarena, TW, VU, SC, CK, NP, NU, AS, Kosrae, Yap, WS, PW, SB, BI, NR, KI, TD... Cây có tên tiếng Anh là Bitter Root và được biết đến với nhiều tên gọi địa phương nhờ đặc điểm sinh học và hình thái đa dạng.
