Melocactus zehntneri
Melocactus zehntneri (Britton & Rose) Luetzelb.
Melocactus zehntneri là một loài xương rồng thuộc họ Cactaceae, phân bố ở vùng bắc đông bắc Brazil, đặc biệt là tại bang Bahia. Loài này có thân dưới tròn, thường có khoảng 11 gai dọc và một phần thân trên kéo dài gọi là cephalum, có thể dài tới 72 cm. Cephalum có thể phát triển đến 16 vòng năm và được coi là một trong những mầm hoa sống lâu nhất được biết đến. Loài này được phát hiện vào năm 1968 bởi Leopoldo Horst và A.F.H. Buining.
Description
Melocactus zehntneri có tên gọi khác là Melocactus giganteus và Cactus zehntneri. Giống như các loài xương rồng đầu quỷ khác, nó có thân dưới tròn, thực hiện chức năng quang hợp, và thân trên kéo dài. Phyllotaxis của loài này thường là 34/55. Cephalum có thể phát triển với nhiều vòng năm, cho thấy tuổi thọ cao. Loài này được mô tả khoa học vào năm 1923 bởi Luetzelb., dựa trên nghiên cứu của Britton & Rose.
