Description
Citrullus colocynthis เป็นพืชที่มีลำต้นเลื้อยและพบได้ตามทะเลทราย มีต้นกำเนิดในพื้นที่ทะเลเมดิเตอร์เรเนียนและภูมิภาคตะวันตกของทวีปแอฟริกา ได้แก่ Levant, ตุรกี และ Nubia ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์นี้ตีพิมพ์ในปี ค.ศ. 1838 โดย Schrad. ซึ่งปรับปรุงชื่อจาก L. ชื่อทั่วไปในภาษาอังกฤษคือ bitter apple พืชชนิดนี้มีพิษและมักถูกใช้ในทางยาบางอย่าง แต่ไม่เหมาะสำหรับการบริโภคโดยตรง
