Description
Vitis vinifera is a member of the Vitaceae family and is known for its economic importance in viticulture. It is native to areas ranging from Morocco and Portugal to southern Germany and northern Iran. The plant is cultivated in many regions, including British Columbia, France, and the Netherlands. As of 2012, between 5,000 and 10,000 varieties of Vitis vinifera grapes have been identified, though only a few are commercially significant. The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753.
