Coulter pine, or big-cone pine (Pinus coulteri), is a conifer in the genus Pinus of the family Pinaceae. It is an evergreen conifer that can live up to 100 years. Native to the coastal mountains of Southern California and northern Baja California, it thrives in Mediterranean climates with infrequent winter rains and dry summers. Isolated groves are found as far north as Clearlake, California.

Description

Pinus coulteri is native to the coastal mountains of Southern California and northern Baja California, growing in Mediterranean climates. It is an evergreen conifer that can live up to 100 years. Isolated groves are found as far north as Clearlake, California, on the flanks of Mt. Konocti and in Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. Despite their geographical isolation, these populations are very similar in morphological characteristics and in their oleoresins.
