Gnetum edule는 상록, 목질, 암수동주인 덩굴식물로, 인도 남부의 힐 포레스트, 특히 Nilgiris 지역의 나무에 자란다. 새 잎은 3월에, 꽃은 3~4월에, 열매는 4월 이후에 형성되며 11월에 노란색으로 익는다.
