It belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to the Cape Fold Mountains in South Africa, ranging from the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape to the Kouga Mountains in the Eastern Cape.

This plant is native to the Cape Fold Mountains in South Africa, where it is found from the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape to the Kouga Mountains in the Eastern Cape. It was first described in 1799 by Willd.
