Carthamus tinctorius는 Asteraceae 과에 속하는 일년생 식물로, 학명은 L.가 1753년에 발표했다. 영명은 distaff thistle이며, 알버타, 브리티시 컬럼비아, 포르투갈, 프랑스, 벨기에, 러시아, 칠레 등지에서 분포한다. 이 종은 건조한 환경에서 자라며, 뿌리는 깊게 뻗어 생존 능력을 높인다.
Description
Carthamus tinctorius는 다가지 일년생 식물로, 볼 모양의 꽃 머리에 노란색, 주황색, 또는 붉은색의 꽃을 지닌다. 각 가지에는 1~5개의 꽃 머리가 달리고, 꽃 머리당 15~20개의 씨앗이 포함된다. 이 식물은 씨앗에서 식물성 기름을 추출해 상업적으로 재배된다. 이 종은 고대부터 재배된 작물로, 깊은 뿌리 덕분에 계절성 비가 내리는 건조한 환경에서도 잘 자랄 수 있다. 학명의 타입은 Fuchs (1542)의 도면이 지정되었으나, 원저작에 포함되지 않았기 때문에 원래의 원소로는 인정되지 않는다.
