Attalea speciosa, the babassu palm, is a palm species native to the Amazon rainforest in South America. It is the main species in the Maranhão Babaçu forests in the states of Maranhão and Piauí. The palm is distributed in several regions including Bolivia, Brazil (Northeast, North, Southeast, West-Central), Suriname, and other global locations. It was first described in 1826 by Mart.

Description

Attalea speciosa is a member of the Arecaceae family and is commonly known as babassu palm. It is found in various regions of Brazil, including the Northeast, North, Southeast, and West-Central areas, as well as in Bolivia and Suriname. The species is particularly significant in the Maranhão Babaçu forests of the states of Maranhão and Piauí. It was first published in 1826 by Mart.
