Alnus rhombifolia, the California alder, is a tree species native to western North America. It is found in regions such as British Columbia, California, Idaho, Mexico Northwest, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. This species typically grows in riparian zones at altitudes between 100 and 2,400 meters. It is commonly found in chaparral, woodlands, montane, and temperate forest ecoregions.

Description

Alnus rhombifolia is a member of the Betulaceae family and is part of the Alnus genus. It was first described in 1842 by Nutt. This species is primarily distributed in western North America, from British Columbia and Washington east to western Montana, and south through the Sierra Nevada and Peninsular Ranges to Southern California. It is adapted to riparian habitats and is predicted to occur in northern Baja California based on its climatic preferences.
