Wilayah asalnya melipasi dari subbenua India hingga Tiongkok bagian selatan dan Indochina, serta Filipina.

Spesies ini termasuk dalam genus Rubus dan familia Rosaceae. Ditemukan pertama kali pada tahun 1815, tanaman ini dikenal dengan berbagai nama umum seperti Asian Wild Raspberry.
