Yunnan Crab Apple
Malus yunnanensis (Franch.) C.K.Schneid.
Malus yunnanensis is a species in the genus Malus, family Rosaceae, native to Southern Asia, including China North-Central, China South-Central, Myanmar, and Tibet. It is commonly known as Yunnan Crab Apple. The species was first described in 1906. It is a deciduous tree growing up to 13 m tall, with oval to oblong leaves and white flowers that bloom in May. The fruit is a red pome, 1.0–1.5 cm in diameter, with white spots, maturing from August to September. It grows in mixed forests at elevations of 1600–3800 m.
Description
Malus yunnanensis is a tree reaching 8–13 m in height, with terete branches that are pubescent when young and glabrescent with age. The leaves are petiolate, 6.0–9.5 × 3.6–5.8 cm in size, with a cordate, rounded, or truncate base and an acuminate, acute, or obtuse apex. The crenate to serrulate margin is characteristic. Flowers are white, 0.6 × 0.4 cm, with 20–25 stamens and 5 glabrous styles. The inflorescence is corymbose with 8–12 flowers. The pome is subglobose, oblate, or oval, red with white fruit spots. Chromosome number is 2n = 34. It is found in seasonally green, terrestrial habitats in mixed forests.
