Yefen
Fuirena umbellata Rottb.

Fuirena umbellata is a perennial rhizomatous herb native to a wide range of tropical and subtropical regions, including the Neotropics, Afrotropics, and parts of the Pacific and Oriental regions. It is a member of the Cyperaceae family, commonly known as the sedge family. The plant is characterized by its slender, angular culms, linear-lanceolate leaves, and distinctive inflorescence with clustered spikelets. It is commonly known as Yefen and is found in diverse habitats, including forest galleries, riverbanks, and lakeshores.
Description
Fuirena umbellata is a perennial herb with a rhizomatous growth habit. The culms are solitary, acutely five-angled, and can reach up to 120 cm in height. The lowermost node is often swollen. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, measuring 13 to 17 mm in length and 1.5 to 1.7 mm in width, with five veins and an acuminate apex. The margins are ciliate, and the ligule is brownish, hyaline, and truncate. The lower involucral bracts are leaf-like, 2 to 10 cm long, with densely pubescent sheaths, while the upper bracts are shorter and not sheathing. The inflorescence consists of 8 to 14 glomerulate clusters of spikelets, each cluster bearing 6 to 30 spikelets on a white villous pedicle. The spikelets are greenish-brown, ovoid-ellipsoid, and measure 4 to 7.5 mm in length and 2 to 3 mm in width. The glumes are ellipsoid to oblong, 2 to 2.5 mm in length, membranous, and tinged blackish to brownish. They are abaxially pilose towards the emarginated apex and have three veins ending in a short puberulent awn. The perianth consists of six segments in two whorls; the outer three are needle-like, whitish, and scabrous, while the inner bristles are obovoid to oblong, whitish to brownish, and ciliate. The stamens are three in number, 2.5 mm long, with oblong anthers measuring 0.8 to 1 mm in length. The style is 1 mm long, with three plumose stigmas. The achene is brown, ellipsoid to obovoid, three-sided, and measures 0.8 x 0.7 to 1 mm, including the stipitate base, with a 3 mm punctate conical whitish beak at the apex.
Habitat
Fuirena umbellata is typically found in forest galleries, along the banks of rivers, and near lakes. It thrives in moist, often shaded environments and is adapted to a variety of tropical and subtropical ecosystems. The species is known to occur in regions with high humidity and well-drained soils, often in association with other wetland or riparian vegetation.
Cultivation
While not commonly cultivated, Fuirena umbellata can be grown in moist, well-drained soils in partial to full shade. It is suitable for wetland gardens or as part of riparian restoration projects. The plant requires consistent moisture and may benefit from occasional pruning to maintain its shape. It is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate a range of soil types as long as they remain moist.
Uses
Fuirena umbellata is primarily of ecological interest, serving as a component of wetland and riparian vegetation. It contributes to soil stabilization and provides habitat for various aquatic and terrestrial organisms. There are no widely reported traditional or commercial uses for this species, though its presence in riparian zones may indicate its role in water filtration and erosion control. Further research may uncover potential uses in ecological restoration or as an ornamental plant in specialized gardens.
