Wissadula hernandioides
Wissadula hernandioides (L'Hér.) Garcke

Wissadula hernandioides is a perennial subshrub in the Malvaceae family, found in regions spanning from North to South America. It was recently recorded in the Caatinga domain of Brazil, specifically in Pernambuco. This species is distinguished by its leaf shape, mericarp spines, and the indumentum on branches and petioles. It is similar to W. amplissima but differs in the type of trichomes on its branches. The addition of this species to the Caatinga flora highlights the need for continued botanical exploration and conservation in the region.
Description
Wissadula hernandioides is an erect, perennial subshrub reaching up to 1.5 m in height, with pubescent branches and tomentose stipules. Its leaves are alternate, cordate, and have a membranous texture with stellate and simple trichomes. The inflorescence is terminal and paniculate, with yellow, bisexual flowers and a schizocarp with 5 mericarps. The species was collected in an open area at the margin of a Caatinga fragment in Pernambuco, Brazil. It is distinguishable from W. amplissima by its pubescent, stellate trichomes. The new record contributes to the six Wissadula species now documented in the Caatinga domain and Pernambuco.
