It is found in southeast China, Japan, Korea, and regions of eastern Russia such as Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and Sakhalin. This species typically grows in forested areas, as well as grassy and rocky subalpine habitats. It was first described in 1859 by A. Gray.
