Marsupella profunda, the western rustwort, is a liverwort native to Europe, found in Portugal, Great Britain (Cornwall), and the Canary Islands. It is a small reddish liverwort that can be mistaken for Marsupella sprucei, which has a broader distribution.
Description
Marsupella profunda belongs to the family Gymnomitriaceae and is part of the genus Marsupella. It is known from Santa Maria Island, Madeira Island, and globally. First described in 1887 by Lindb., this liverwort is distinguished by its reddish coloration and small size. It is often confused with Marsupella sprucei, another species in the same genus. The species is commonly referred to as western rustwort in English.
