It is found in regions such as Alberta, British Columbia, the United States (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming), and parts of northern Mexico. It also occurs in Europe, including Belgium, the Flemish Region, France, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. The species was first described in 1900 by Maxon. It is commonly known as western polypody and is adapted to rocky environments.
