It is native to the U.S. states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia, as well as the Northeast region of Mexico. This plant is typically found in pinelands and open coastal habitats. The species was first described in 1834 by Nutt. Its common names include dune groundcherry and Walter's groundcherry.
