Urtica thunbergiana, known as Japanese nettle or hairy nettle, is a member of the Urticaceae family. It is distributed across Japan, China, and Taiwan, where it thrives in moist forest environments at higher elevations. The plant flowers between July and September, with seeds maturing from August to October. It is utilized by the larvae of the butterfly species Vanessa indica as a food source. The species was first described in 1846 by Siebold & Zucc.
