Ulmus elliptica is a species of elm in the Ulmaceae family, native to the Caucasus, Krym, Turkey, and southern Ukraine. It was described by K.Koch in 1849. The species is distinguished by its samara and has been the subject of taxonomic debate.

Description

Ulmus elliptica was initially reported by Koch to form extensive woods in the Caucasus. It resembles Ulmus major in leaf morphology but differs in its samara. Some botanists consider it closely related to U. glabra, while others suggest it resembles U. rubra in its samara. Many authorities regard it as a regional form of U. glabra, though some, including Henry, Bean, and Krüssman, recognize it as a distinct species. It is also distinguished from U. scabra (now U. glabra Huds.) in certain Armenian and Russian plant lists.
