Typha austro-orientalis is a member of the Typhaceae family and is part of the Typha genus, which includes several species commonly known as cattails. It is distributed across southern European Russia, as well as in Kazakhstan, Crimea, and Uzbekistan. This species thrives in freshwater wetland environments, particularly in marshes. The species was formally described in 2006 by botanist Mavrodiev, based on a specimen collected in 2000 near the city of Volgograd.
