It was previously considered a subspecies of Cupressus torulosa due to similar morphology and proximity in distribution, but genetic analysis has since confirmed its status as a distinct species. It is commonly known as the Tsangpo cypress.
Description
Cupressus gigantea, described by W.C. Cheng and L.K. Fu in 1975, is a member of the Cupressus genus. It is found in the Cupressaceae family, which includes cypresses and related conifers. The species was once grouped with Cupressus torulosa based on physical similarities and geographic overlap, but genetic research has shown that they are separate species. The name Tsangpo cypress is used for its common identification in English and other languages.
