The species is found in countries such as Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and others across South and Southeast Asia. The fruit is a small, ellipsoid berry, measuring 7–10 mm in length and 4–5 mm in width, turning bluish-purple when fully ripe. The species was first described in 1851.
