Syagrus macrocarpa is a palm species native to the eastern regions of the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro. It is found as scattered individuals or in small groups. The palm reaches heights of 4–10 m and has 8–20 leaves, each up to 2 m long. The leaves are curved at the tip, with hairy margins near the trunk, and feature 180–320 slightly coiled leaflets arranged irregularly. The fruit is oval, greenish-yellow, and 6–9 cm long. It is cultivated, though its seeds have low germination rates. In Minas Gerais, it is known as baba-de-boi-grande and maria-rosa.
Description
Syagrus macrocarpa, described by Barb.Rodr. in 1879, is a member of the Arecaceae family. It is restricted to the eastern parts of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The species grows as isolated individuals or in small groups. Its leaves are characterized by their curved tips and hairy margins near the trunk, with 180–320 leaflets arranged in multiple planes. The fruit is oval, measuring 6–9 cm in length, and has a greenish-yellow color. Cultivation of this palm is possible, although seed germination is difficult and yields are low. It is locally referred to as baba-de-boi-grande and maria-rosa in Minas Gerais.
