Houstonia purpurea, known as Summer Bluet, is a species in the Rubiaceae family. It is native to the eastern United States, including states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Pennsylvania, and others. The species was first published in 1753 by Linnaeus.
Description
Houstonia purpurea is a flowering plant in the Rubiaceae (coffee) family. It is commonly referred to as Summer Bluet, as well as by other names such as Venus's pride, woodland bluet, and purple bluet. The plant is native to the eastern United States, with a distribution that includes states from eastern Texas and Oklahoma east to Florida and Pennsylvania, and with scattered populations in Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, New York, and New England. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1753. There has been some discussion regarding the lectotype designation, with Reveal and others choosing what is labeled as Clayton 63 (BM), despite initial confusion over labeling. Terrell later confirmed the same specimen, resolving the confusion.
