Spiderwort

Tradescantia virginiana is a member of the Commelinaceae family and is recognized as the type species of the genus Tradescantia. It is native to the eastern United States and is known by several common names, including Virginia spiderwort, common spiderwort, lady's tears, and spider lily. The species is widely distributed in regions such as Ontario, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and others. The original material for the species is identifiable as Tradescantia ohiensis Raf., and there have been discussions regarding its nomenclatural status. A neotype was proposed from Virginia, but as the proposed 'Names in Current Use' (NCU) concept was not adopted, this neotypification remains invalid. A conservation proposal may be necessary to maintain the application of T. virginiana.
