Halophila stipulacea is a seagrass species in the Hydrocharitaceae family. Originally from the Indian Ocean, it expanded into the Mediterranean after the Suez Canal opened and is now found in the Gulf of Aqaba. It has also been recorded in the Caribbean, where it is spreading.

Description

Halophila stipulacea (Forssk.) Asch. is a marine plant native to the Indian Ocean. It has spread to the Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean. It is documented in locations such as Lebanon, Greece, Malta, Sicily, and Tunisia in the Mediterranean. The species was first described in 1867 and is part of the Hydrocharitaceae family, also known as the tape-grass family. Its presence in the Mediterranean is attributed to the Suez Canal's opening, and it has recently been observed in the Caribbean region.
