Polypodium cambricum, commonly known as southern polypody, is a fern species in the family Polypodiaceae. It is native to southern and western Europe, growing on shady rocks, along the coasts of the Mediterranean Basin, and in the mountains of Atlantic Europe. This terrestrial, deciduous fern can reach up to 60 cm in height and has pinnate fronds. Its sori turn yellow in winter.

Description

Polypodium cambricum was first published in 1753 by Linnaeus (L.). It is distributed across regions such as Denmark, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Greece, and parts of North Africa and the Middle East. The species was once rejected by Shivas (1961) due to concerns about the specimen being a monstrosity. However, under the Leningrad Code (1975), names based on such specimens are now valid, and subsequent authors have accepted P. cambricum. A review by Pichi Sermolli (1986) provides further clarification on its status. The fern is also known as limestone polypody or Welsh polypody and is characterized by its spreading growth habit and preference for rocky, shaded habitats.
