Solenopsis laurentia
Solenopsis laurentia (L.) C.Presl

Solenopsis laurentia is an annual herb in the family Campanulaceae, native to southern Europe and North Africa. It was first described by Linnaeus as Lobelia laurentia in 1753 and later transferred to the genus Solenopsis by C. Presl in 1836. The species is characterized by its scapose, glabrous stems, oblanceolate to spathulate leaves, and solitary axillary flowers with a bilabiate corolla. The nomenclatural history includes several synonyms and taxonomic revisions, including a lectotype and epitype designation to clarify its application. The specific epithet honors M. A. Laurenti, a 18th-century physician from Bologna.
Description
Solenopsis laurentia is an annual herb reaching 8–13 cm in height, with a solitary, erect, and glabrous stem. Leaves are cauline, 10–20 mm long, oblanceolate to spathulate, with entire to weakly crenate margins and petioles 3–5 mm long. Flowers are solitary on axillary pedicels 2–6 cm long, with 1–2 bracteoles and a calyx 3–4 mm long with linear-lanceolate lobes. The corolla is tubular, 5–6 mm long, bilabiate, with bluish-lilac lobes and a whitish lower tube. The lower lip bears clavate papillae. Stamens are fused to the corolla, with violet anthers. The ovary is fused with the calyx tube. The species is distributed across southern Europe and North Africa, from Portugal to Turkey and Morocco. Linnaeus originally described it as Lobelia laurentia, but it was later transferred to the genus Solenopsis by C. Presl in 1836. Nomenclatural revisions include the designation of a lectotype and epitype to stabilize its application.
