The plant is native to the southeastern United States and parts of the Caribbean, including Alabama, Arkansas, Bahamas, Cuba, Florida, Georgia, Jamaica, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
