slender Russian thistle
Salsola collina Pall.

Salsola collina, commonly known as the slender Russian thistle, is an annual plant in the family Chenopodiaceae. It is native to regions in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America. This species is characterized by its slender, often reddish stems and small, linear leaves. It is known for its ability to thrive in disturbed and arid environments, and it is often considered a weed in agricultural settings.
Description
Salsola collina is an annual plant that can grow up to 70 cm in height. It is typically erect but may become prostrate in mountainous areas. The stems are reddish and either glabrous or scarcely papillate. The leaves are linear or filiform, with a mucro ranging from 0.6 to 2.0 mm in length. The lower leaves can be as long as 80 mm and as narrow as 0.5 to 1.0 mm. Flowers are arranged in axillary clusters and in the main inflorescence. The flower clusters below the main inflorescence are abundant and consist of two flowers surrounded by bracts and bracteoles that are connate almost to the top. The perianth segments are membranous, glabrous, and r-shaped, with tips appressed to each other. The fruits are lenticular, measuring 1.1 to 1.5 mm in size. The seeds are oriented horizontally due to anacrostyly.
Habitat
Salsola collina is commonly found in disturbed and arid environments, including roadsides, fields, and other areas with poor soil. It is well adapted to dry conditions and can thrive in regions with low rainfall. This species is native to Eastern Europe and Central Asia and has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America, where it is often considered an invasive species.
Cultivation
Salsola collina is not typically cultivated for ornamental or agricultural purposes. It is a hardy plant that can grow in poor soil conditions and is often found in disturbed areas. Due to its ability to spread rapidly and compete with crops, it is considered a weed in agricultural settings. Control measures include mechanical removal and the use of herbicides.
Uses
Salsola collina is not used for commercial or ornamental purposes. It is primarily known as a weed in agricultural areas, where it can compete with crops for resources. In some regions, it may be used as a source of forage for livestock, but this is not common. The plant is also known for its ability to form tumbleweed balls, which can be a nuisance in certain environments.
